Ice Cube Gallery is seeking prolific emerging and established artists and curators for juried review to become a member of one of Denver’s newest and most dynamic artist-run galleries! We are currently seeking all themes and styles of contemporary art including performance, installation, photography, film, multi-media, light, sculpture, artist talk series, juried exhibition or any other style of contemporary art that is pushing the boundaries in concept, process, and/or material. We are looking for prolific artists willing to take risks.

Icebreaker 2.0 is an annual exhibition of the finest artists living and working in Colorado. Sponsored by the Ice Cube Gallery, a dynamic, contemporary art co-op, this show received wide attention during its debut in January 2010 when it focused on the creative talents of artists living and working in RiNo (River North Art District). The 2011 exhibit has been expanded to give all Colorado artists an opportunity to be exhibited in downtown Denver. This exhibit has no specific theme and contemporary artists of every medium should consider entering.

Juror
Tricia Robson, Assistant Curator for the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, earned her Bachelor's Degree in Art History and English at the University of San Diego, California and her Master's Degree in Contemporary Art History at the University of Colorado at Boulder, with a focus on German installation artists Kurt Schwitters and Jonathan Meese. In addition to her time at the MCA, Tricia has worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego as well as the architecture firm Ottolino Winters Huebner in St. Louis, Missouri.

How to Enter

This entry fee entitles you to enter up to 3 pieces. • Your digital images need to be submitted in the following way: On a CD- ROM in jpeg format, longest image side 1800 pixels, dpi 300. The file name should be the first 12 letters of the title of your piece. You can submit two images per piece – one full and one detail. (Sample: piece named Astronomic Events would have these two file names: astronomicevFull.jpg, astronomicevDetail.jpg. Please label the CD-ROM with your name and the names of your pieces.
Restrictions

Mike's Process Journal

I am finishing up my third week of residency at Platteforum. I am working with a group of kids from PS.1 in Denver. We have been altering art manual pamphlets while thinking about the concept of flying. What could it possibly mean to each of the students? About half had never "flown" before and have been creating some interesting responses to the weekly prompts. We are using found materials, ink, gesso, lots of paper -new and old magazines, new magazines, and pages from books.

Many of them are accomplished drawers. But all are weekly tasked to create something out of multiple sources. We have also completed a performance art project, I will name "chaos before flight" that ended with the students pushing and pulling a single bed into the glass elevators at the Millenium bridge. Loved that we all jostled into a private space after spending collective energy in public.

Last night our class consisted of cutting up, reassembling, and recontextualizing the art manuals pamphlets within another chosen book. Up until last night the altered pamphlets were somewhat like process journals- Journaling, free writing, in response to our discussions, and prompts.

Downside- I miss the kids when they don't show up. Come in and make up your time in open studio!

Spent the week at Platteforum starting a new body of work, on Flying.

Wrote some new poetry, created a new video piece from a private performance art piece. One more moment in time slowed down recreated in thoughtful processing of space and flesh. Really intently pushing around some plastic to create a dream space of light, pattern, and movement. Is this the moment directly before I start to fly? Is this a caress of pattern a calming after an episode of movement? Fashion, pattern, place, process, materials focused on pushing self past the dirt on the floor of the earth.

Honestly, even if it is hidden the self reflection remains. Bennett's character development is also a reading into the lives of women and men from, not a mirror, but a hall of mirrors with endless reflections of all that enter whether it be reader, writer, or character.

Installation peeks at the accumulation of my conceptual process while referencing and exposing random inner dialogue “pregnant with psychoanalytical material especially the oedipal complex[1]”. I intersperse the site with pooled plastic object, images, fractious sound, and fragmentary text meant to provide the viewer with conflicting layers of objects that reference power, beauty, and fragility.
